Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is the most common form of dental sedation used in our practice. Incredibly quick, convenient, and absent from lingering side effects, we find that nitrous oxide brings an abundance of benefits to pediatric dentistry. Our team at Tega Cay Pediatric Dentistry is pleased to provide this service to our young patients. If you have any questions about nitrous oxide, or would like to request it for your child’s next visit, please contact our Fort Mill, SC office today
Not only does nitrous oxide relieve anxiety and feelings of fear or discomfort in the dental office – but it allows our team to work more efficiently as well. When children are feeling fearful, they tend to be more reluctant to cooperate. While we completely understand this and are always patient with every child, this tends to make appointments last much longer – further adding to the child’s negative experience.
Once sedation is administered, all of this turns around entirely. Anxiety quickly melts away as children slip into a peaceful state of mind, perfectly capable of hearing, seeing, and responding to our team, but all while feeling comfortable and at ease. This allows our team to work quickly and complete their cleaning, examination, restorative treatment, or any other procedure they are visiting us for. No matter how old your child is or the purpose of their visit, nitrous oxide can be incredibly advantageous in producing the best dental experience possible. Overtime, this can change their perspective on dental care entirely – meaning they will be so comfortable and confident, they don’t even need the sedative at all.
What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a gentle form of sedation that is administered by being inhaled for the duration of the visit. We place a small mask over your child’s nose so that they may begin breathing in the sedative. Effects take place nearly immediately – allowing your child to feel pure relaxation while our team completes the work they need. Once the appointment ends, the mask is flushed with pure oxygen as the nitrous oxide leaves your child’s system. Within a minute or two, they will be feeling completely themselves again – perfectly capable of returning to normal activity, such as school, sports practice, or their regular routine at home.
Dental sedation with nitrous oxide gives your child the opportunity to become relaxed and confident in the dental office, at their own pace. While they may feel fearful and anxious the first few times they visit us, once the sedative is administered and their fear fades away, they will consciously experience a pleasant dental office visit. They will remain awake as they witness the warm smiles of our team members, the gentle treatment provided, and the overall feeling of being cared for in the dental chair. Overall, they will build a better relationship with dentistry as they discover there is truly nothing to fear.
